National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Since 1895, YWCA Delaware has advocated for the health and safety of women.

Through our Home Life Management Center, YWCA Delaware empowers women by offering a domestic violence program that supports the individual’s journey from victim to survivor to achiever. Participants receive safety and life skills education as well as individual, group and financial counseling to help them break the cycle of violence. In October, we will be hosting our usual monthly domestic violence support group for all survivors’ domestic violence, plus some additional meeting time to encourage participation from survivors of abuse who have not previously reached out for help. These safe, private and confidential meetings are open to all adult survivors. For more information, please call 302.658.7110 x204.

Our Youth Empowerment program offers Teen Dating Violence workshops at high schools and community based organizations throughout Delaware to teach boys and girls the warning signs of teen dating violence, strategies to remove themselves from abusive situations and to inspire in them the strength to stand up and report when they are victim, witness or learn of abuse. According to the Department of Justice, young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence – almost triple the national average. While the workshops are available year round, we have allotted additional time for this free outreach during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. For more information about bringing our program to your youth organization or school, please call 302.224.4060 x215.

During our Week Without Violence, which takes place during the week of October 13th - 17th, we ask that you take action against all forms of violence in our communities and join together to create positive change.
