Michelle Basham Brings Energy and Ideas

to YWCA Delaware

Our new CEO Michelle Basham is thrilled, after only a few weeks in her new position, that her career experience and education are a great fit with the demands of the job.  "I am so excited that my education and years of experience in the non-profit sector can be put to use meeting the challenges we face," Michelle said. "I am convinced that Delaware is a good fit for me and my family --- two rescue cats and a rescue dog!"

Michelle looks forward to meeting all of you, our dedicated volunteers and supporters, and hearing your stories about your commitment to changing lives through the programs and services of the YW.

YWCA Mission Talk will give you a periodic update on the work of YWCA as we strive to eliminate racism, empower women and enrich families. This e-letter will offer volunteer opportunities and announce events to attend. Michelle plans to check in often.

Thank you for all you do for YWCA Delaware. Your support is critical and we urge you to share this newsletter and invite your friends to learn more about our mission.

The Em-Power of Money
To be empowered and to guarantee a secure future for themselves and their families, women must learn how to manage their finances. YWCA Delaware offers services through the Economic Empowerment program to help clients save, manage and invest money.

Three of our programs have surpassed their goals for number of individuals served. Read about Erica, who realized her dream of becoming a homeowner with the assistance from a YWCA Financial Empowerment Counselor.

In 2013:
Financial Literacy Program
1044 individuals served which represents 119% of our goal

Financial Literary Workshops
911 individuals served which represents 114% of our goal

Financial Coaching
133 individuals served which represents 166% of our goal

From Rent to Buy after Six Months of Financial Coaching

Erica desperately wanted to get out of her current rental unit. Turning to help from the Financial Coaching program at YWCA Delaware, she attended the Introduction to Homeownership class in July of 2013 to learn about the steps to buying a home. With guidance from her Counselor, Erica created a budget, took advantage of the Artisan's Credit Builder program and secured the credit scores she needed to qualify for a mortgage. She was also able to save the funds needed for a down payment. After just six months working with her YWCA Financial Empowerment Counselor, Erica was successful and was approved for a home mortgage.

Visit our website for more information on the Economic Empowerment program.

YW Women Asked to Do More of What they Already Do ----

Multi-tasking the Mission!

YWCA Delaware Board is proud to announce that they recently completed a visionary strategic plan. Along with conservative fiscal management and realistic financial objectives, the plan focuses on integrating mission goals within programs and services. Women have always been terrific multi-taskers, so simultaneously empowering women, eliminating racism while enriching families is certainly achievable! However, we will need the help of our volunteers and continuing financial support from our donors to achieve our mission.
Delaware Center for Women's Entrepreneurship
Goals Met in 2013 -- Goal Setting Begins for 2014
In 2013:
  • 25 jobs were created through new businesses started with assistance from the DCWE
  • 11 new businesses have gotten their start through the programs at DCWE
  • 44% of these start-up businesses have generated revenue by implementing their DCWE business plans

YWCA Helps Connie Open Her Doors to the Children of Kent County

Connie had been operating a church-sponsored childcare center for many years and wanted to start her own business by building a child learning facility in her community. In 2011, she attended a conference where YWCA Delaware had an exhibit. Motivated by what she learned from YW representatives, Connie enrolled in the YWCA Kent County Business Plan Development series and subsequently wrote her own start up plan. Her loan applications were successful and despite frustrations due to DELDOT issues, inspections and construction delays, Connie opened for business in January. With enrollment goals met, she is working on her summer program schedule and expects to hire 15 full- and part-time employees.
